Tobias Assistant Professor of Psychiatry
Education:
Dr. Teichert completed his undergraduate studies in Psychology and Mathematics at the Heinrich Heine University of Düsseldorf. After graduating with a BA in Mathematics (2002) and a MA-equivalent diploma in Psychology (2003), he worked with Dr. Reinhard Eckhorn in the NeuroPhysics Department at the Philipps-University of Marburg. In 2007 he received a PhD for his work on the role of gamma-oscillations in primary visual cortex for object perception. Dr. Teichert then did a post-doctoral fellowship in the lab of Vincent Ferrera in the Department of Neuroscience at Columbia University, where he received funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Kavli Foundation. He used a combination of detailed behavioral analyses, single-cell recordings and pharmacological interventions to dissect the neural mechanisms of adaptive decision-making. In 2013 Dr. Teichert joined the faculty of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh as an Assistant Professor.
  Research
The main goal of the Teichert lab is to dissect the neural mechanisms that underlie impaired cognitive function in neuropsychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia and addiction. Using an animal model system, the lab aims to: (1) establish behavioral phenotypes and neural correlates that model intact human cognitive function; (2) test causality by manipulating neural function/transmitter systems; and (3) develop an animal model of impaired cognitive function.

A second line of research in the Teichert lab is focused on developing and testing a non-invasive ultrasound-based method to manipulate neural function in deep-seated brain regions, such as the basal ganglia. This work will help to determine if a similar approach can be used to deliver therapeutic drugs to specific neural targets in patient populations, thus translating neuroscience findings back to a clinical setting.
